Corduroy

This month's book pick is Corduroy by Don Freeman, and it's a sweet one. First published in 1968, with a handful of reprintings, Corduroy is a book that's stood the test of time. This pick should have been sent to our friends born in 2021 this month, and I'm hoping it was a welcome book for all ages.

Corduroy is a bear in a department store waiting to be chosen. He sees many other toys being chosen again and again. Finally, one day a little girl comes in and wants him. Her mother says they've already bought enough that day, and Corduroy doesn't look new because of his lost button. So, that night, he goes on an adventure to find his button. He gets caught by the security guard, and he is placed back on his shelf, where the little girl comes back for him the next day. She takes him home and gives him a sweet home and a new button.

One of the reasons Corduroy has stood the test of time is because each person understands wanting something special at a store. Our wants may not all be the same and widely differ based on age and interests, but we all know the feeling of wanting something special we picked out.

The little girl comes back with her own money that she counted up and had saved to get Corduroy. So, this is a lesson for saving your money for something really special as a child, something really important to you.

I also love the sweet idea of wanting something that isn't perfect or the newest toy. This might be a lesson for all of us (myself included) that we can want something, do something, have something or be something that isn't perfect. Perfect isn't realistic, and I think that realizing that and teaching our children that could be a good lesson for everyone. The little girl took the bear home and said that she liked the way he looked, but that she was sewing a new button on for him to be comfortable, and I think there's something so beautiful in that.

This picture book may be an older one, but it's as sweet and lovable as ever. I hope you enjoy reading it with your little this month! Happy reading, friends!
