Raindrops to Rainbow
Our book of the month pick is Raindrops to Rainbow by John Micklos, Jr., illustrated by Charlene Chua.
Happy May my friends!
This month's book that I've chosen to read is Raindrops to Rainbow by John Micklos Jr., illustrated by Charlene Chua. This book, for our kiddos around age 3, is absolutely perfect for learning our colors. Red, green, blue, orange, what is their favorite?
This month, I want to talk about those interruptions while reading, because, well, we have little ones that have SO MANY questions and comments while we do anything in life, and reading our books is no exception. I want you to know, interruptions are encouraged here. I know, I know-it goes against every single fiber of your being to just stop reading and have another conversation. BUT, as we've talked about, your child learns best from you-the wonderful person sitting there with them, already reading their book. This is the perfect book to have those interruptions with too! We can chat about what else in our room in blue, or what is green that's outside? What have you noticed is something you eat that could be red? Applying your everyday life to books that you read and information that your child is taking in is the perfect way for them to learn. Oh, there are seven colors in that rainbow we just read about? How about we count to seven real quick?
The other day, Eleanor and I were reading a book she picked out about a kid's camp with dinosaurs. She stopped me to look at every single dinosaur and talk about it. We ended up having a conversation about what dinosaurs ate, leading to what other animals eat and how they find their foods. This conversation was not something I expected from her, nor was the information something I felt I would normally bring up into a conversation-with her or any other human. However, it was a completely natural experience that brought up new ideas, and now she wants to know what dinosaurs ate plants and which ones eat meat.
So, explore with your child, in whatever books you choose. You'll be amazed what new ideas and possibilities will pop up without even trying! Happy reading!
