Spend it!

Spend It! by Cinders McLeod is a super fun story for our older readers. It comes from a series by McLeod all about money and learning how to use it. Sonny is learning all about allowance and how to use it in this book. How many carrots does each thing he wants cost? ("Carrots are money in Bunnyland.") Sonny is choosing between three exciting things, and it is SO HARD to choose!

This book gives great and realistic examples of how money works and how we have to pay for things, which is becoming important information for our four and five year olds. Sonny's mom explains how the toy rocket, the pogo stick and the bounce house all cost very different amounts of carrots. We can't just spend the same amount of money on each thing.

Books like this one are some of my favorite because they teach realistic problems with great illustrations and words. They make the hard things understandable, yet something your child actually wants to read. It's wonderful to find books that your child actually wants to read and that teaches them something helpful. (We've been reading Frozen books over and OVER again lately. Sigh.)

"The bouncy castle costs 100 carrots.

That's ridiculous!

Well, it's not ridiculous if you have 100 carrots and nothing else to spend it on.

Still ridiculous! Forget the bouncy castle."

I also love that this book goes through the different wants for Sonny and talks through each one, giving parents a fantastic example of how to talk about money and explain with their child, especially because, let's be honest, we don't think about every single thing we might talk about with our child/children. Having a ready example of this makes our lives easier too. What more could we ask for?!

It's always a good day to find a great book for everyone.

Happy reading and happy learning, my friends!
