Gwendolyn's Pet Garden

Our book of the month pick is Gwendolyn's Pet Garden by Anne Renaud, illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh.

Gwendolyn begs and begs for a pet - one with any number of legs (she isn't picky). Her parents get her a "pet garden" instead. She reads to learn all about gardening. Will she have a good return?

This sweet book is perfect for the start of spring, and a simple reminder to teach our children the ideas of patience and caring for something. Gardening is the perfect activity to take up with your child, whether it be pretty flowers, helpful herbs, or delicious vegetables, learning to care for a plant teaches so many great concepts.

If you don't already have a garden, start simple. Pick a few plants that might be of interest to both of you. Take time to read about gardening together and picking out things you'll need. Have a good conversation about what to expect. Wait and watch your plants grow.

We started with indoor plants so that they would be around longer and because that's what I thought would be easiest to keep track of since you won't have to water each day. Since Spring is upon us though, it may be the perfect time to get a yummy tomato plant to grow together! There's almost nothing better than pulling off a fresh tomato that you've worked so hard to grow. Share that joy with your child. You never know what will happen!

Happy Gardening!
