Wonder Walkers

“Do mountains have bones? Are forests the mountains fur? I wonder. Me too.”

Hello Imagination Library readers and welcome to the New Year! We’re starting our blog for this year with a Caldecott Honor book, Wonder Walkers by Micha Archer. This beautifully illustrated book is for our older readers and inspires some silly questions for their brains to mull over.

Wonder Walkers encourages your child to see the natural world through a different view. It asks questions they may not have thought about already, and it may spark some questions of their own.

“Is the sun the world's light bulb?”

Well? Is it?!

Use this book as an opportunity to go outside and look around. Help your child ask crazy questions about the world. Maybe answer them if you know the answer! Google them if you think there could be an answer! Remember, you don't have to know everything to help your child learn. Eleanor asked me how a toilet works the other day, so we definitely had to Google that. Momma doesn't know everything baby! But, all this to say, let your mind and your child's mind roam free. You might be surprised what they can come up with!

This is a great time for a nature craft too while you are talking through things. You could bring some snow inside. We painted snow with watercolor paint the other day. Or use whatever you can find outside as stencils or stamps for your craft. Acorns, sticks, dried up leaves, whatever you've got! It doesn't have to cost a bunch of money for your child to be exploring and thinking.

Another great activity to do with this book is to find the things the book is saying about the body. “Are roots the plant’s toes?” Have them wiggle their toes. “Do caves have mouths?” Have them open their mouths as wide as they can! Follow along, and let their bodies follow along too.

I wonder what adventure your family will find this month? I'd love to hear the questions your little ones come up with! Happy reading, my friends!
